Wrap Up|| January.

wrapup

Hey!

January was a good month. I had a lot going on in January in my personal life, but I still managed to read a lot (10 books)! I read a few ARCs and was able to get some reviews up for those. I even read two books toward my Reading the Alphabet challenge. I put an “ABC” next to the titles below that indicate which ones I read for my Reading the Alphabet challenge. I think I actually had a really good month as far as reading and blogging goes with being busy at home with other life happenings. February might not be as great with reading (more about this later in the post), so I am glad I was able to read so much this month. You can find a full list of these books and the other books I read this year over here. All will be linked to Goodreads below and I will also link to individual blog posts for them if I did a review.

Physically Read Books:
These are the books that I read myself (not audiobooks) throughout the month of January.

georgethewickedkingfamousinasmalltownperfectgirlfriendsixofcrows

George by Alex Gino – 4 out of 5 stars. (ABC)
I’ve had George on my TBR for awhile, so I finally picked it up for my Reading the Alphabet challenge. I am so glad that I finally read it, because I really liked it a lot. I liked the story and the characters. It’s also an important read and I highly recommend.

The Wicked King by Holly Black – 3 out of 5 stars – Review.
I was so stoked when I received an ARC of The Wicked King. It was good and I liked it, but it was not anywhere near as amazing as The Cruel Prince was, sadly. There wasn’t as much excitement like TCP. The first 60-70% of the book there just wasn’t enough happening and it got boring at times. Everything crazy and exciting happened right at the end of the book. You can check out my review for more about that.

Famous In A Small Town by Emma Mills – 4 out of 5 stars – Review.
Famous in a Small Town was a cute and fun read. I really liked it and it was my first Emma Mills book. It centered around friendship more than romance, which was nice. Great characters and store. Feel free to check out my review for more.

The Perfect Girlfriend by – 3 out of 5 stars – Review.
I had some mixed feelings about The Perfect Girlfriend. I thought it was good and I liked it, but it was also really slow to start and I really didn’t care for the ending. Feel free to check out my review for more.

Six of Crows by Leigh Bardugo – 4 out of 5 stars. (ABC)
YOU GUYS!!! LOOK! I finally did it! I finally read Six of Crows after saying I would for over three years. It didn’t completely blow me away enough to get five stars, but I did really like it a lot and it was a lot of fun to read. I am really looking forward to reading the sequel hopefully in February or early March. Waiting on a copy from the library since my physical copy is packed away right now.

greatalonecomicswillbreakyourheartcircebloomrelease

The Great Alone by Kristin Hannah – 5 out of 5 stars.
The Great Alone wrecked me. Ripped my heart into a million pieces. I can’t count how many times I cried throughout this story. I don’t think I ever stopped crying. It was so heartbreaking and hard to read. It was also everything and forever has a piece of my heart now. Hands down already calling it as one of my favorites of the year and it’s only been less than a month in the new year.

Comics Will Break Your Heart by Faith Erin Hicks – 4 out of 5 stars. – Review to come.
I read Comics Will Break You Heart pretty quickly, which was awesome. I actually liked it way more than I originally thought I would because I’m not that huge into comics or superheroes. Although, the book is way more than just about those things! It was cute and fun to read. It was also a little heartbreaking at times. I haven’t had the chance to write my review yet, but it will be coming soon.

Circe by Madeline Miller – 3 out of 5 stars.
I started Circe at some point last year and got about 60% through it and was just so bored so I put it down. I was still on the fence if I even wanted to actually finish the book or not. I decided to finish it this month since I had already got through so much of it and a lot of people said the ending was good. So did I like the last 40% of Circe? The last 40% wasn’t that bad. It was definitely a lot more entertaining. I’m glad that I decided to finish it instead of DNFing it.

Bloom by Kevin Panetta – 4 out of 5 stars.
I thought Bloom was so great! I really liked it. I loved the illustrations and color theme of them. The story itself was so cute and fun to read. I really enjoyed the characters, except Cameron. He was a total jerk and had me rolling my eyes quite a bit. I loved Ari and Hector together. The story had me craving bread and cupcakes the entire time too. At the end the author even included a recipe from one of the things the characters baked and a playlist!

Release by Patrick Ness – 3 out of 5 stars.
At the time of posting this I am not finished with Release, but I will have it finished later today so I wanted to include it in my wrap up. I am about 60% into the book right now and it’s pretty interesting. For the most part I like it, but it is a little strange. I always find Ness’ books strange though. I’ll add another update about this book in a future post with my final thoughts and rating. EDIT: I just finished Release and added my rating. Overall, I liked it. It wasn’t mind blowing, but it was still pretty good.

What books did you read in January? Have you read any of the ones that I read? Feel free to link me to your post, so I can check it out!

I don’t know how much reading I will actually get to do in February, because I am FINALLY moving at the end February, so I will be spending a lot of time packing and trying to stay organized with that so I don’t lose my mind. Also, Kingdom Hearts 3 just released at the end of January!! I’ve been waiting so long for this, SO LONG! I’ve been a fan of the games since they first came out many many years ago on Playstation 2 when I was a kid, lol. So it’s been years waiting for a new game. I have a feeling that KH3 will be taking over my life for awhile….it has already started! 😛

I figured if I read at least five books a month, I will be able to reach my Goodreads challenge goal at the end of the year. I read two months worth in one month (!!!), so I feel pretty good going into February knowing that I probably won’t get a chance to read that much. February is going to be so busy for me with the move. We’re moving 3.5-4 hours away from where we currently are, so it’s a lot to do. I am apologizing in advance if I can’t hop on here as often in the coming weeks.

And it’s the last time I can say this, but I have a book giveaway happening on my blog and this is the last day to enter. I am picking two winners tomorrow (2/1). It’s international as long as Book Depository ships to you. Feel free to check it out if you want to enter.

Book Haul|| January.

bookhaulyellow

Hey!

I actually wanted and planned to take pictures of my books this month, but I packed them before I had the chance to. I completely forgot and realized after I packed them, OOPS! Haha. Goodreads cover it is. I can’t wait until March when I can finally see all of my books again. Anyway, onto my January book haul! You can check out all the books I own over here. There’s also links on that page to pages for my kindle books and my physical books.

Physical Books:

thewickedkingkingofscarslanguageofthorns

The Wicked King by Holly Black
King of Scars by Leigh Bardugo
The Language of Thorns by Leigh Bardugo

I pre-ordered The Wicked King from Barnes & Noble, so my cover is black! My Cruel Prince is also the B&N edition too, so I wanted them both to match. I am really excited to have it even if I didn’t enjoy the story as much as TCP. I can’t wait for that third book though, because that ending was pretty crazy. Of course I had to get King of Scars, because NIKOLAI! The book cover is so gold and so shiny, heart eyes for days. I also got The Language of Thorns, because I didn’t have it yet and I pretty much need all of Leigh Bardugo’s books. There was also a short story I seen the e-book for on Amazon that I wanted to read, but I noticed it was in this book so I just got it so I can read all of the short stories.

Books from Publishers/Authors:

werulethenightbloom

We Rule the Night by Claire Eliza Bartlette
Bloom by Kevin Panetta

I was sent We Rule the Night from The Novl. I was so stoked when I opened my mail and seen this book in the package! It sounds so amazing and like something I would really like and I can’t wait to read and review it. Also, that cover is amazing! I hope I love it, so I can buy a finished copy when it releases in April. I won a giveaway for Bloom on Goodreads, which I was so stoked about. I am currently reading it now and it’s pretty good so far.

Netgalley:

justforclicksspinthedawnhappymessyscarylovehowtohackaheartbreak

Just for Clicks by Kara McDowell
Spin the Dawn by Elizabeth Lim
Happy Messy Scary Love by Leah Konen
How to Hack a Heartbreak by Kristin Rockaway

There was one week in the month that I went request crazy on Netgalley, which I RARELY ever do. It resulted in four new eARCs (that I am super stoked to read and review) and a few that I am still waiting to hear back on. I think I am hands down the most excited about Spin the Dawn!! These others sound great and right up my alley too though, so I am of course looking forward to reading those too.

E-Books:

allegedlythisadventureendsmeetcutebridgeofclay

Allegedly by Tiffany D. Jackson
This Adventure Ends by Emma Mills
Meet Cute by Jennifer L Armentrout + Others
Bridge of Clay by Markus Zusak

I also got a few e-books as well this month. I managed to not go overboard for once? HAHA. 😛 I’ve been really wanting to check these out, so I couldn’t pass up the deals. I am so stoked for Bridge of Clay. I was really happy when I seen that one on sale for $1.99.

Wrap up coming soon. I’m crossing my fingers I can finish Bloom before the end of the month, so I’m waiting on posting my wrap up until I see if I can finish it. It’s a graphic novel, so maybe a good possibility. Tomorrow is the last day to enter the book giveaway on my blog! It’s for a book of your choice and it’s international as long as Book Depository ships to you. I’m picking two winners on February 1st! 😀

Hey!

I thought it would be fun to do blog posts showing the books that I read throughout the year and what I rated them. This list is my two star reads. This is the last post of this little mini series, because I didn’t have any one star books in 2018. They are in the order that I read them, but I did group book series together. You can check out a list of all the books that I read in 2018 over here.

The Lost Sisters by Holly Black

I had so much high expectations for these books and I wanted to love them so much, but they ended up being just okay to me. I had way too many issues with them or I found them to be mostly boring. Linked below are my other star rating posts that I did throughout the month. It was a lot of fun looking back on all the books that I read last year. Looking forward to seeing what my lists will look like this year!

5 star reads of 2018.
4 star reads of 2018.
3 star reads of 2018.

I should have my wrap up and book haul posts coming soon and also a review for Comics Will Break Your Heart. I’m still in the process of writing that one. I really liked it a lot, but I also have no idea what I want to say. I hate when that happens! Sometimes I know what to say and others I’m just stumped, even if I enjoyed a book a lot, sigh. I’ll figure it out though. The book doesn’t release until middle of February, so I have time to get my review written.

In case you missed it, I have a giveaway happening on my blog for my four year blogiversary! You can win a book of your choice and it’s International! I’ll link it down below if you’re interested in checking it out and entering. I’ll be picking two winners this Friday! 🙂

These are all books that I liked, but wasn’t blown away. A lot of these I had really high expectations for, but was let down in some way. I do still plan to eventually continue with the Shades of Magic series and the Extinction Trials series. I liked them enough to want to see what happens next. I might have to reread (or find a full summary) A Darker Shade of Magic though, because I already forgot everything (LOL), I guess it wasn’t that important/memorable to me.

I’ll have my two start post in the next couple days. I actually forgot all about these posts. I had them finished for the most part, but then forgot to post them, oops! 😛 You can check out my four star reads over here. There’s also a link to my five stars there too.

Review|| The Perfect Girlfriend.

perfectgirlfriend

The Perfect Girlfriend by Karen Hamilton
3 out of 5 stars

“If you love someone, set them free. If they come back, they’re yours. If they don’t, make them.”

Goodreads Description: Juliette loves Nate. She will follow him anywhere. She’s even become a flight attendant for his airline, so she can keep a closer eye on him. They are meant to be. The fact that Nate broke up with her six months ago means nothing. Because Juliette has a plan to win him back. She is the perfect girlfriend. And she’ll make sure no one stops her from getting exactly what she wants. True love hurts, but Juliette knows it’s worth all the pain… Juliette has everything going for her: she’s young, pretty, and driven, and she’s training for an exciting new career as a flight attendant. The darkness in her past doesn’t matter, because she’s moved beyond all that, and she’s building a great new life for herself-one that will impress her ex-boyfriend, Nate, who left her in a foolish moment of commitment-phobia, one that he surely regrets now. But he’ll be so proud of her once he sees how much she’s grown. And he will see her. After all, he’s a pilot at the very same airline where Juliette is training. What kind of man wouldn’t appreciate the effort Juliette has taken to win Nate back? She cleans his apartment when he’s not there, and makes sure to leave all his favorite foods in the fridge. It’s only a matter of time before he leaves his airheaded new girlfriend and realizes Juliette is the only one for him. He will realize it. Juliette will make sure of it. After all, she is the perfect girlfriend.

I received an ARC of The Perfect Girlfriend from the publisher via Netgalley in exchange for an honest review. Release date: March 26, 2019.

I’ve never read a Karen Hamilton book, but The Perfect Girlfriend sounded like something I would really like. I like twisty creepy stories and this one sounded like it would be.

There were a ton of twisty creepy things in the story, but I did find it pretty slow to start and not a whole lot going on at the beginning. I was impatiently waiting for crazy things to happen, but it didn’t happen right away. I wasn’t completely satisfied with the way that the book ended, to be honest. I wanted more from the ending, but it just wasn’t there. Juliette definitely had a few screws loose and she made for a good character. Things happened in her past, which made her the way she was, which was actually a little sad.

Overall, I liked The Perfect Girlfriend. It had it’s twists and creepiness to it. I would have liked if more happened, but for the most part it was good and at times hard to put down. Even though I wasn’t happy with the ending, there were a lot of good things to make up for it and I was still invested in the story and wanting to know how it played out. It didn’t blow me away, but I also didn’t hate it; it was still pretty entertaining at times and pretty messed up other times.

WHOA….I’ve been blogging for four years! That’s pretty crazy to me, especially when I first started (in 2015) I had no idea how long I would even keep it up or how big it would even get. I am close to 1400 followers and I’m still shocked by it every single day! I am so thankful for all the friends I’ve made and met through blogging and the book community. I am really looking forward to seeing what happens this year. I can’t wait to post more things, continue the friendships I made, and meet some new friends! 😀

I did a giveaway last year and it was pretty successful, so I am going to do another giveaway this year! It will run from today (January 17) until January 31st. I will randomly pick and announce TWO winners on February 1st. 📖

You will win:
+ A book of your choice up to $20, so basically any book as long as it’s $20 or less.

How to enter:
+ Follow my blog (if you’re not already).
+ Comment your favorite book you read in 2018.

Do both of those things and you’re entered, pretty easy! This giveaway will be international as long as Book Depository ships to you. If you are in the USA, I can send from Amazon if you prefer that way.

GOOD LUCK!! & thanks for reading my blog over the last four years!

Review|| Famous in a Small Town.

famousinasmalltown

Famous in a Small Town by Emma Mills
4 out of 5 stars.

Goodreads Description: For Sophie, small town life has never felt small. With her four best friends—loving, infuriating, and all she could ever ask for—she can weather any storm. But when Sophie’s beloved Acadia High School marching band is selected to march in the upcoming Rose Parade, it’s her job to get them all the way to LA. Her plan? To persuade country singer Megan Pleasant, their Midwestern town’s only claim to fame, to come back to Acadia to headline a fundraising festival. The only problem is that Megan has very publicly sworn never to return. What ensues is a journey filled with long-kept secrets, hidden heartbreaks, and revelations that could change everything—along with a possible fifth best friend: a new guy with a magnetic smile and secrets of his own.

I received an ARC of Famous in a Small Town from the publisher in exchange for an honest review. Release date: today, January 15, 2019.

I’ve never read any books by Emma Mills before, so I wasn’t sure what to expect when I picked up Famous in a Small Town. I ended up really liking it and read it pretty quickly. Easy to read and hard to put down.

I really liked that it didn’t center completely around romance and it was more about friendship. A great cast of characters with so many different personalities and things about them, but all the friendships worked perfectly when put together. They all had me laughing out loud and also getting pretty teary eyed. There were a few twists that I wasn’t expecting. I had my ideas of how things were going to play out and which characters connected with Megan Pleasant, but I was wrong every time, so that was fun being surprised.

Overall, I really enjoyed Famous in a Small Town. I thought the story was cute and fun, but it also had it’s moments where things weren’t always so easy and fun for the characters. There were times when it was a lot deeper than I originally thought it would be. I happen to own a few other Emma Mills books, so I definitely plan to check out more of her books ASAP!

travel

Hey!

Andy and I decided to find another park in our area that we haven’t been to and check it out. We used to do this a lot, but haven’t in awhile. We want to go to as many places as we can in this area before we move, so we decided to start checking out parks again. Dr. Von D Mizell-Eula Johnson State Park (damn that name is a mouth full, LOL) is pretty much just a few minutes down the street from us and I can’t believe we haven’t known about this place, because it was so nice; especially the the beach area! Part of the park is ocean and the other part is woodsy.

Processed with VSCO with l1 preset

These are all the pictures that I took in the beach/ocean part of the park. It was really pretty there and I was obsessed with the view, especially the very first picture that I shared. I think this is more of the fishing area, because a lot of people had fishing poles and they were fishing off the rocks as you can see in the first set of pictures. The last four pictures is more of a sandy area where a lot of people were swimming and laying out. It’s a lot more secluded in this area of the beach than the typical touristy part, which is pretty neat. Nice to keep in mind if I want to ever go to the beach. Even the bathrooms looked nicer than the typical busy touristy beach.

Processed with VSCO with k3 preset

79c1e2f5-8b43-4677-94c0-a2254876d2cc

These are the few pictures that I took in the woodsy area of the park. I didn’t take too many, because I was freaking out because of all the mosquitoes LOL! We made it through though and this was the view when we came out of the woodsy area. IT’S SO PRETTY! Heart eyes for days! We ended up on a bridge and when you cross over the bridge then you’re at the beach (the more sandy part)!

Below are just some random pictures that I took over the last week. I haven’t taken very many, so I figured I would include them in this post as well.

5278c874-2f3c-4bf3-99ed-afaf0f013892

It wouldn’t be a proper post if I didn’t include pictures of the sky. You all probably know by now that I am obsessed with the sky, so I take a lot of pictures of it. These are my first 2019 pictures of the sky LOL with probably a million more to come. 😛

It also wouldn’t be typical Ashley post without pictures of my furbabies. So the left picture of my kitties, this is the first time I almost got the perfect picture of them all three together. BUT of course the littlest one (Leaf – white calico at the top) ruined it. She was in the middle of smacking October (black calico), so I called her name and she looked up but October was still like “WTF” at Leaf and didn’t look up when I called. You can see little Leaf’s paw being held up slightly, lol. UGHHH. I just want one good picture of them all looking at the camera at the same time, is that too much to ask for? 😛 And then my pup Dax on the right.

That’s all for this post. I can’t wait to figure out which park we want to check out next. I have a few bookmarked and there’s a couple museums that I want to go to as well. So we’ll see what happens!

I read so many books that I really liked last year. This year I want to try to finish the Saga series, I’ve been really enjoying it so I need to finish it. I’ll have my three star and two star posts at some point next week. What books did you give four stars to in 2018? You can check out my five star reads post linked below.

Next week I’ll have a couple reviews to post for Famous in a Small Town and The Perfect Girlfriend. I’m trying to get ahead on the ARCs this year, so I’ve been trying to read more of those back to back. I currently have about six to read with release dates of Januray-April, so I want to read those pretty soon and get my reviews written.

I tried to think of which ones would be my top five favorites out of them all, but I couldn’t narrow it down. It’s so hard to narrow it down, because they were all really amazing and I loved them so much. Of course that’s the reason why they got five stars! I got pretty lucky with reading some pretty amazing books last year. In the next couple days I will post my four stars rating books, so be on the lookout for that! 🙂

What books did you give five stars to in 2018? See any favorites on my list?

Review|| The Wicked King.

The Wicked King by Holly Black
3 out of 5 stars.

I’m not posting the Goodreads summary, because I don’t want to spoil The Cruel Prince for those that haven’t read it yet. Read at your own risk if you haven’t read the first book, because possible spoilers of The Cruel Prince.

I received an ARC of The Wicked King from the publisher via Netgalley in exchange for an honest review. Release date tomorrow, January 8, 2019.

It’s no surprise that I loved The Cruel Prince as much as everyone else did. The hype was real, you guys! I was so stoked when I was approved for the ARC of The Wicked King. I couldn’t wait to dive into it! I needed more of the story. I needed to know what was going to happen next. I needed more Cardan and Jude! I pretty much instantly fell in love with the story right from the beginning. There was excitement and things happening on every page. I was looking forward to more of that with The Wicked King.

It wasn’t there though. I didn’t instantly fall in love. Nothing happened until the last 30% of the book. It was a very slow start and with nothing that exciting happening. Nothing that really stood out to me or made me go “omg” or freak out like I did with The Cruel Prince. The last few chapters of The Wicked King were the highlight of the book and had the shock factor. I was disappointed with the story, because it lacked so many things that the first book had.

Cardan was even different. He didn’t have the same attitude or wickedness that he did in the first book. He was a bit of a bore. You didn’t see the old Cardan until the very end of the book, which was sad, because I loved his character so much! He’s part of what made the story exciting, so I was sad that it wasn’t like that this time. Jude was a bit annoying and whiny in this book, which sucked because I loved her in the first book. The two characters I loved the most were not the same to me. They just felt too different and maybe that’s because of what they’ve been through being thrown into being King and a new life.

But then with that being said…The Wicked King was a short book and felt rushed. I feel like so many other things could have happened or have been added if it was a longer book. Like more of Jude and Cardan right after the ending of The Cruel Prince instead of it taking place five months later. Not a lot of things were explained or shown. So we didn’t get to see the change in Cardan or Jude with their new roles and lives, because it started five months later and maybe that would have helped to explain why they felt like different characters to me?

I did like the book though, so it wasn’t a completely bad sequel. The ending had a lot of excitement and twists to it. One that even left me shocked. Overall, I liked it and it had it’s enjoyable moments. I was just really sad and disappointed that I didn’t fall in love with it like I did The Cruel Prince. I’m still really looking forward to the third book and can’t wait to get my hands on it to see what happens next. The ending left on a pretty crazy cliffhanger, so I’m still stoked.

Reading the Alphabet.

readingthealphabet

Hey!

In the hopes of trying to read a lot of my older books, I decided I am going to do this read the alphabet challenge. Most of these books are older books that I’ve had on my shelves or Kindle for years aside from two that I got last year. I want to try to get to those older books that I’ve had for awhile, so I was inspired to do this when I did the “my blog’s name in books” tag. I created a page for this challenge on my blog, so that I can update it throughout the year and have easy access to this list without digging through a ton of blog posts; page over here. Here are the books that I chose to read this year for this challenge; titles linked to Goodreads.

allthebrightplacesbeforewegoextinctcarvethemarkthediabolicelizaandhermonsters

All the Bright Places by Jennifer Niven
Before We Go Extinct by Karen Rivers
Carve the Mark by Veronica Roth
Diabolic (The) by S.J. Kincaid
Eliza and Her Monsters by Francesca Zappia (e-book)

firstandthengeorgehalfbadillgiveyouthesunjackaby

First & Then by Emma Mills
George by Alex Gino (e-book)
Half Bad by Sally Green
I‘ll Give You the Sun by Jandy Nelson
Jackaby by William Ritter (e-book)

kissquotientlegendmagonianotadropoliviatwist

Kiss Quotient (The) by Helen Hoang
Legend by Marie Lu (e-book)
Magonia by Maria Dahvana Headley
Not a Drop to Drink by Mindy McGinnis
Olivia Twist by Lorie Langdon (e-book)

passengerqueenofheartsreplicasixofcrowsthissavagesong

Passenger by Alexandra Bracken
Queen of Hearts by Colleen Oakes
Replica by Lauren Oliver
Six of Crows by Leigh Bardugo
This Savage Song by Victoria Schwab

theunexpectedeverythingvengeanceroadwolfbywolfyoungeliteszeroes

Unexpected Everything (The) by Morgan Matson
Vengeance Road by Erin Bowman
Wolf by Wolf by Ryan Graudin (e-book)
X no book – freebie
Young Elites (The) by Marie Lu
Zeroes by Scott Westerfeld

You’ll notice that I don’t have a book for the letter “X“, so I am just going to use that as a freebie and read whatever book that I want, but has to be an older book that I’ve had for two years or longer. I’m not sure which one I will pick for it yet, so I will update it later in the year on my page that I created for this challenge. I don’t plan to read them in order, but I do plan to read them all before the year ends.

It’ll be nice getting to all of these older books that I’ve been wanting to read for so long now. Since my Goodreads challenge goal is to read 60 books this year, this challenge leaves me room to read other books as well as these. 😀 I also have a goal of reading 40 of my own books (they cannot be ARCs, library books, or books I buy in 2019), so it also helps with that reading goal as well. With whatever other books I read this year, I do hope that I grab more of my older books, because my current unread ratio of the books that I own is at 66% (UGHH) and they are mostly books that I’ve owned from 2+ years. A lot of these are also series starters, so we’ll see how my goal of binge reading series as I start them (2019 reading goals post linked at the end) works out this year.  I’m scared (LOL), because I’m so bad at finishing series.

Every year since 2015 I have said that I was going to read Six of Crows (LOL), but this is the year you guys. FOR REAL THIS TIME! I might knock this one out early on, just so I can finally say I read it! All except six of these books are books that I own the physical copies of, but as I’ve said many many times, my books are packed away. So with that being said, I will either have to read my e-book ones first or hope that my library has some of these available. Later this year (hopefully by the end of March) I will FINALLY be able to unpack all of my books. This will probably end up being one of the happiest moments of 2019, HAHA. 😛

Have you read any of the books on my list? Are there any on my list that you haven’t read yet, but really want to? What do you hope to finally read this year?

2018 Year in Books (Reading Stats).

yearinbooks2018

Hey!

I actually did pretty awesome in 2018! My Goodreads reading challenge was to read 50 books and I was able to complete that goal and read even more than that!

2018readingchallenge

77 books read for challenge.
17 audiobooks listened to.
total books read: 94

The books I read and the audiobooks I listened to brought my total amount of books read in 2018 to 94 books, which is pretty awesome! I even did better than last year by reading and listening to more books. I read 18 more books than I did in 2017 and I listened to 9 more audiobooks than I did in 2017. Crossing my fingers that 2019 is even better!

I didn’t include my audiobooks in my challenge goal at the start of the year, because I wanted to be able to read 50+ books on my own. I did add them to my Goodreads at the end of the year though, so that I can have a list of all the books I read overall for the year in books (below) on Goodreads.

yearinbooks2018-2

I changed up how I rated things in 2018. I decided to not do any half star ratings and I also used the rating system that Goodreads has for their stars.

How Goodreads has it setup:
5 stars – it was amazing
4 stars – I really liked it
3 stars – liked it
2 stars – it was ok
1 star – did not like it

I feel like I used to give three stars out in previous years if I thought it was okay and 2 stars if I didn’t really like it and forgot about 1 star altogether. So in 2018 I tried to use the way Goodreads has their stars when it came to rating books. Here are the star ratings that I had for 2018:

24 – 5 stars
41 – 4 stars
22 – 3 stars
7 – 2 stars
0 – 1 stars

I am pretty happy with the amount of books (and audiobooks) that I listened to and a lot of them were books that I REALLY enjoyed, which is great. I am going to be doing a series of blog posts coming soon of all the books that I read in 2018 with their star ratings. I didn’t keep track of the books that I decided to DNF (did not finish), but this year I am going to keep track of them. I don’t even remember off the top of my head what they were. I know there were a few though. My first post will be all the five star reads of the year and so on. I did it last year and thought it was a fun idea, so I want to do that again. Be on the look out for those! 🙂

How did you do this year with your reading goals? Feel free to link me to your posts!

2019 Reading Goals.

readingoals

Happy New Year!

I thought I would once again post my reading goals for the year. It’s always fun to think about and to make lists. A lot of these goals are repeats or similar from last year, because I really want to continue to stick to these goals this year as well.

2019 Goodreads Challenge. I set my goal this year to 60 books. By time September came around, I had already completed my 2018 Goodreads challenge of 50 books. I decided to increase it by ten books for this year. I didn’t want to go too big or too little with my challenge. I don’t want to get too overwhelmed. I think it’s manageable though, because I read (and listened) to over 70 books last year.

Read 40 of my own books. I went through all the books that I read in 2018 and a lot of them were either ARCs or library books. I am drowning in unread books that I own, so I want to try to read at least 40 of my own books. These books will not include any books that I buy in 2019, it will not include any library books I check out, and it will not include any ARCs that I receive. It also didn’t help that the majority of my books are currently packed up. I am hoping by the first few months of 2019 I’ll finally be able to unpack them.

Reading the Alphabet. I did a book tag last year called “My Blog’s Name in Books“. You basically spell your blog’s name out with books on your TBR. It inspired me to do this, but with the alphabet. I have so many older books that I haven’t read and have been collecting dust. I want to read one for every letter of the alphabet and that’s where “Reading the Alphabet” came along. I’ll have a blog post up for that later with all the books I plan to read for each letter. It will also help with my previous goal of reading 40 of my own books. I’ll have a post about this coming soon!

Read more adult books. I read a lot more adult books in 2018 and I want to continue to do so this year as well.  I love YA, I always gravitate more toward YA, but I also enjoy adult books too and I do own quite a few I haven’t read yet. There are also a ton that I don’t own that I want to read as well. Don’t get me wrong, I will still and forever love YA, but it’ll be nice to branch out more. Hopefully I will be able to branch out even more this year with reading more books that aren’t YA. Even more non-fiction would be great too!

Read my unfinished series. I didn’t do very well with this goal last year. I have started a lot of book series over the last four years and haven’t finished them. I want to finish the completed series and catch up to the newest books in the uncompleted series that I’ve started. In the last couple of years I’ve gravitated toward more standalone books, because I feel so guilty starting a new series when I have so many that I haven’t finished yet. So I want to get to more of those, so I can finally start some new series that I’ve been dying to read and have yet to start. I used to read an entire series (if it was an older one and had all or most books out) before I even started a new book/series. I need to do that again, which brings me to my next thing.

Binge read any new series I start. If I start a new book series and it has more than one book out (or all the books), I want to binge all the available books instead of putting them on hold and reading other books. Before I started my blog in 2015, I used to do that like I mentioned above. I never even bought a new book until I finished the one I was currently reading; unless it was a series that I was loving, then I bought all the books and binge read them all. Not going to lie, as much as I love blogging and everyone I’ve met here, it’s kind of changed my reading habits A LOT. Now I’m drowning in unread books and unfinished series.

Continue to buy less books. In 2018 I did a pretty good job with not buying so many books. It was so hard though, OMG. There are so many books out there that I really want and am still dying to get my hands on. I used my library a lot if I was dying to read something that I didn’t have. It helped me with finally reading more of the older books I’ve had on my shelves that I hadn’t read yet and kept neglecting due to buying more and more books every month. So I want to continue to not buy so many new books and continue to read my older books.

Get rid of books I didn’t like or plan to reread. I had this as a goal for 2018 and while it did work out for the most part, I’m sure there are still more books that I can donate/trade. Currently almost all of my books are packed away though, so I know that I won’t be able to accomplish or really work on this goal until toward the end of the year.  I continue to run out of bookshelf space, #bookwormproblems. I want to put an empty box next to my bookshelf (once I buy new shelves, because currently I have none! *cries*), so if I don’t like a book or it was just “okay” and I don’t have any real connection to it, I plan to drop it in the empty box instead of putting it back on my shelf. Once the box is filled, I will donate the books or give them away and continue again. I want to try to own books I REALLY love versus having a ton of books taking up space that could be used for new books.

Don’t fall behind on ARCs. I usually do really good with my ARCs at the beginning of the year, but toward the end of the year with the holidays always coming up quick, I always seem to fall behind. I want to try to figure out a good schedule and work around this, so it doesn’t happen again this year. I also don’t plan to request too many ARCs this year, so that should hopefully help with that as well. I love ARCs, I love to review them, but falling behind totally sucks! It takes all the fun out of it, which is never good.

These are pretty much my main focus for 2019 as far as reading and books go. I also want to have fun with this, so I am not putting any pressure whatsoever, because then that just sucks the fun out of it and I’ll not want to try anymore. I don’t really have any set goals for blogging, because I struggled in 2017 with it becoming a chore rather than fun. I changed it up in 2018 though, so I am going to continue to post the content that I want to post (whether books, photography, travel, etc.) and post when I want to this year as well. I don’t want to feel like I have to or it’ll again not feel fun to me and I may not be around much again. I also have a ton of things happening in 2019 that I haven’t talked about yet, so that may take up some of my time as well. It’s all about balance and I have to find something that works for me.

What are some goals you have for this year? Feel free to link me to your posts if you have one!

I have a few more blog posts that I am hoping to post over the next week or so. One being my 2018 reading stats and my five star reads of 2018! Be on the look out for those. 🙂
