Popular Books that Lived Up to the Hype.

Hey!

I forever have bad luck with hyped books. I don’t usually love them and I don’t understand the hype surrounding a lot of them. I don’t know why I am like this, haha. I guess when I see a book getting so much hype, my expectations become WAY too high and I expect amazing and get none of those amazing feelings when I read them. There have been a few where the hype was real and I was here for it though!

Falling Kingdoms by Morgan Rhodes
The Serpent King by Jeff Zentner
The Cruel Prince by Holly Black
The Darkest Minds by Alexandra Bracken
The Bone Season by Samantha Shannon

A little cheating for Falling Kingdoms, because not going to lie, the first book didn’t “WOW” me, but I am LIVING for the series and it’s one of my favorites of all-time now. With all the hype surrounding The Cruel Prince, I was sure I was going to hate it. I absolutely loved it so much and I can’t wait to get my hands on the sequel.

Dark Matter by Blake Crouch
Red Queen by Victoria Aveyard
Everything, Everything by Nicola Yoon
Shadow and Bone by Leigh Bardugo

Honestly, I have no idea why I am including Red Queen on this list. I guess because I loved the hell out of Red Queen, but the rest of the series sucked. The sequel was bad and I didn’t even get past a few chapters of the third book before I had to DNF it. But I did LOVE the first book so much, so I guess the hype was real for that one. The rest of the series, not so much.

What popular books did you read that lived up to the hype? Feel free to link me to your TTT posts, so I can check them out!

  1. Ohhhh I’m glad you loved The Darkest Minds, Ashley – I’ve been meaning to pick it up ever since I heard about the movie adaptation. I’ve been a bit nervous about it though, because I have read mixed reviews :/ I’m happy you enjoyed it! 😀
    Lovely list! 🙂

  2. I feel the same way about Red Queen! I still haven’t read past the second book yet because that one was such a disappointment.
I recently watched Everything, Everything and loved it way more than I anticipated. So now I defiantly want to read the book!

    • I am so annoying that the sequel to Red Queen was a disappointment, because the first book was so good. UGH. I tried to read the third, but just couldn’t do it. I kind of want to look at spoilers online to see how it ends though. I loved the Everything, Everything movie! The book is just as great. 😀

      • I’m still planning on reading the rest of the series but I’m not in no rush. If it have to just buy them for the beautiful book cover then I will, haha. I can’t wait to read Everything, Everything!

  3. I always think of you when I come across The Bone Season Ashley! haha! which is probably the only reason it’s on my shelf to be started hopefully this year *fingers crossed* The Serpent King deserves ALL THE HYPE! *whoop whoop* 🙂

  4. YAY, so glad to see Simon Vs. on your list. 🙂 I read Red Queen but totally hated the first book. xD So sorry the rest of the series didn’t work out for you–it sucks when you love a book but end up hating the rest of the series (this is probably Shatter Me for me)!

    • I could not leave Simon vs. out! 😀 Such a great book. I kind of wish I hated the first Red Queen book, lol. It would make it so much easier to not feel bad about not liking the other books in the series haha. But they were seriously the worst. You probably would have hated them too if you didn’t like the first one at all. I haven’t read Shatter Me yet, but now I’m scared too. I seen some other people that said the same about it.

  6. I’m terrible with hyped books as well haha. Most of the time I just end up with another unpopular opinion review instead. 😉 Like you, I absolutely loved The Serpent King, Simon, Dark Matter, Everything Everything and Shadow And Bone though. And like you, I enjoyed Red Queen as well but the sequel not so much. I’ve decided to not even bother trying King’s Cage anymore. 😉 Ah and I liked the first The Darkest Minds book as well, atlhough I still have to read the sequels.

    • I’m glad I am not the only one that ends up with a lot of unpopular opinions! All the hype surrounding books just makes me expectations REALLY high when I finally read them, ugh. I am happy to see that you loved a lot of the books on my list too. I’m so annoying about how downhill the Red Queen series went for me. I don’t see myself ever finishing the books. I might look up spoilers to see how it ends though. I can’t wait to see The Darkest Minds movie. I need to get around to reading the sequels ASAP! I might start after I see the movie, so I can kind of refresh my mind with The Darkest Minds, lol. Some details are a little blurred since it’s been awhile. 😀

      • One of the reasons I try to stay away from hyped books… Or at least until the hype has died down a bit. 😉
And watching The Darkest Minds movie is a good idea! I had actually forgotten I did read book two (which didn’t impress me, so that’s probably why I didn’t remember haha), but I’m curious how the series will continue anyway.
