Recap & Book Haul|| February.

februaryrecap

Hello!

I have been so MIA on the blog this month and I am so sorry for that! I’ve been insanely busy with getting all of my wedding stuff done. I don’t have much longer! I’ll still be popping in from time to time to read your blogs and comment as much as I can, but I still have lots more things to do for my wedding. Luckily it’s all the little things. As for my reading, I have done pretty awesome this month with that. I’ve been using whatever free time I have left to read.

Here is what I read this month. You can find a full list of these books and the other books I read this year over here. All will be linked to Goodreads below and I will also link to individual blog posts for them if I did a review.

Physically Read Books:
These are the books that I read by myself (not audiobooks) throughout the month of February.

ernesthemingwaytheboneseasonmimeordergoodbyedays

The Complete Short Stories by Ernest Hemingway – 4 out of 5 stars.
I’ve never read any Hemingway stories, but I was helping a friend out with a project so I read them. Some were boring. Some were really good. I loved the Nick stories the most.

The Bone Season by Samantha Shannon – Review. – 5 out of 5 stars.
The Mime Order by Samantha Shannon – 5 out of 5 stars.
Please excuse my language, but HOLY. FUCK. THIS. SERIES. I love it so much. All the feels. All the craziness. The world. The characters. WARDEN, sigh. Forever love him. I am so excited that The Song Rising is releasing next week, because I need more! Feel free to check out my review of The Bone Season for more.

Goodbye Days by Jeff Zentner – Review. – 4.5 out of 5 stars.
Zentner has done it again. Shattered my heart. This book was SO good. It was as good as I hoped it would be. It was emotional. It was sad. It broke my heart so many times over. I flew through it, because it was hard to put down. Great characters. Great story. Great message. Feel free to check out my review for more.

ghostuniversity

The Ghost at 95 by Barry Lyga – 4 out of 5 stars.
Loving the University by Barry Lyga – # out of 5 stars.
These are short stories written by Barry Lyga (author of the Jasper Dent (I Hunt Killers) series. Each month in 2017 he’s releasing a new story (that can only be bought within that month and then they are gone) and all the proceeds going to the American Civil Liberties Union. ACLU defend the First Amendment. I think that’s pretty awesome and generous of him. I really enjoyed these two and I am looking forward to see what the rest of the short stories for the year are!

thisiswhereitendsforbiddenlola

This Is Where It Ends by Marieke Nijkamp –  4 out of 5 stars.
I’m glad I finally read this book. It was so intense and so crazy. I flew through it. It was so hard to put down. It was also really sad.

Forbidden by Tabitha Suzuma – 5 out of 5 stars.
I’ve been wanting to read this book for awhile now and I finally did. I wasn’t sure what to expect, because it’s about sibilings that fall in love with each other. It ended up being so much more than that though. At times I wasn’t sure how I was supposed to feel, because it’s so wrong but so sad. This book seriously broke my heart. Shattered it. I cried quite a bit and I wasn’t expecting the ending at all. I was picturing something completely different and BOOM! Killed me. Heartbreaking story.

Lola and the Boy Next Door by Stephanie Perkins – 4 out of 5 stars.
Something fun! I needed this after all the sad books I read this month. I really enjoyed Lola. It was a fun story and I loved the characters. Cricket…loved him. I was thrilled when I seen that Anna and St. Clair (from Anna and the First Kiss) was also in the book. I loved them in the first book.

February Book Haul

My book haul is so small this month. I have been trying so hard not to buy any books. Book Outlet has been on point with their books this year, but somehow I have stayed away from them and didn’t get any. There are probably 15+ on their site RIGHT NOW that I want and I have been good. LOL. I did get a few books though.

Milk and Honey by Rupi Kaur
Forgive Me, Leonard Peacock by Mathew Quick

I’ve been wanting Milk and Honey for awhile now and decided to finally get it. Super stoked to read it. I read Forgive Me, Leonard Peacock and loved it. I seen it at the Dollar Tree (if you didn’t know, it’s a store that everything cost only one dollar), so I got that one since I don’t own it.

What did you read this month? Have you read any of the books that I read? What new books did you get this month? Feel free to link me to your wrap up and book haul posts!

That’s all for my February wrap up and book haul. I am pretty happy with the month of February. I’m not entirely sure how much reading I will get done in March since my wedding is happening pretty soon, but I am starting The Night Circus and will definitely be reading The Song Rising.

I hope you have a great day!

Thoughts|| Goodbye Days.

Goodbye Days by Jeff Zentner
4.5 out of 5 stars.

“For the most part, you don’t hold the people you love in your heart because they rescued you from drowning or pulled you from a burning house. Mostly you hold them in your heart because they save you, in a million quiet and perfect ways, from being alone.”

Goodreads Description: Can a text message destroy your life? Carver Briggs never thought a simple text would cause a fatal crash, killing his three best friends, Mars, Eli, and Blake. Now Carver can’t stop blaming himself for the accident and even worse, there could be a criminal investigation into the deaths. Then Blake’s grandmother asks Carver to remember her grandson with a ‘goodbye day’ together. Carver has his misgivings, but he starts to help the families of his lost friends grieve with their own memorial days, along with Eli’s bereaved girlfriend Jesmyn. But not everyone is willing to forgive. Carver’s own despair and guilt threatens to pull him under into panic and anxiety as he faces punishment for his terrible mistake. Can the goodbye days really help?

I received an ARC from Netgalley in exchange for an honest review. I was beyond stoked when I was approved for Goodbye Days. The Serpent King was my favorite book last year, so I was excited to see what else Zentner had up his sleeve!

Of course, he did not disappoint. This book was everything I hoped it would be. It was a tough subject to read about. Goodbye Days made me pretty angry at times and really sad other times. Mostly because I couldn’t believe what was happening to Carver. It really made me angry, because I felt like he didn’t do anything wrong. He was also not treated very well by some of his friends’ families. I don’t want to go too much into what happened, because I don’t want to spoil the book for you guys. I was hurting for Carver though.

Carver was going through a lot of emotional (and physical) things as he dealt with the loss of his three best friends. It was not at all easy for him and being thrown other not so good things in his face as he is already struggling with the loss of his friends was tough to read. You can really tell how much his friends meant to him and how much he loved them. I couldn’t even imagine losing my three best friends and all at one time. I loved all the little stories about his friends, Eli, Mars, and Blake. Zentner is so good at writing about friendships and portraying them so well. It makes you want to be their friends too. They seemed like really awesome guys and their friendship is what everyone hopes to have in a friend. SAUCE CREW!

“If grief is a pounding surf, the absence is a melancholy, gently tossing sea.”

I’m glad that Carver had Jesymn and Georgia after the death of his friends. They were there to help him when he needed someone to talk to and I believe played a huge role in helping him get through everything. And of course I can’t forget Nana Betsy, loved her. I teared up and cried throughout this entire book. I loved the idea behind the goodbye days and each one was so different from the other. I found myself saving line after line, because it was so good. As soon as I get my pre-ordered copy, I will be flagging everything that I saved! So many quote worthy things, because the entire book was written so well.

Overall, this book was SO good. It was as good as I hoped it would be. It was emotional. It was sad. It broke my heart so many times over. I flew through it, because it was hard to put down. Great characters. Great story. Great message. Texting and driving is a relevant thing. It’s happening every day. You may not think anything will happen to you and that you’ve done it a million times and it’s okay. That’s not always the case. It’s happening right now as I am writing this review. It’s also about moving forward and the struggles with losing someone close to you, the grief, the sadness, and everything that comes with it. I loved this book and I highly recommend picking it up. It’ll be releasing March 7th, so mark those calendars!

“The universe—fate—is cruel and random. Things happen for many reasons. Things happen for no reason.”

Hello!

I hope everyone is having a good week so far. I’ve actually been reading quite a bit, which is awesome considering I am SO busy with getting all the last minute wedding things done. There has been quite a lot of hiccups with that, which sucks. Most hasn’t been turning out like I want it to, but honestly, some of it is my fault. It’s been nice to escape all of the crazy wedding stuff with reading more. Here’s what I’ve been reading over the last week/two weeks.

Goodbye Days by Jeff Zentner

I was approved on Netgalley for Goodbye Days and I am so stoked. I’ve been dying to get my hands on Zentner’s new book. The Serpent King was my favorite book that I read last year, so I am excited that I get to read it now. I am about halfway through it already, it’s so hard to put down. It’s so sad though! 😦 The Serpent King tore me to pieces and I have a feeling this one will too.

The Bone Season by Samantha Shannon – Review.
The Mime Order by Samantha Shannon

I have no idea why it took me so long to read this series. It’s so amazing and I loved them both so much. I gave both The Bone Season and The Mime Order five stars. I’ve been REALLY picky with my ratings over the last year or so, so giving these both five stars is big! So action packed and fast paced. So hard to put down and easy to fly through them. Great story line, world, and characters. I loved everything about this series and I am dying to get my hands on the third book in a few weeks! I plan to read that one right away. This series will NO LONGER collect dust on my shelves. Feel free to check out my review of the Bone Season linked above.

Here’s The Bone Season‘s Goodreads description if you’re interested: The year is 2059. Nineteen-year-old Paige Mahoney is working in the criminal underworld of Scion London, based at Seven Dials, employed by a man named Jaxon Hall. Her job: to scout for information by breaking into people’s minds. For Paige is a dreamwalker, a clairvoyant and, in the world of Scion, she commits treason simply by breathing. It is raining the day her life changes for ever. Attacked, drugged and kidnapped, Paige is transported to Oxford – a city kept secret for two hundred years, controlled by a powerful, otherworldly race. Paige is assigned to Warden, a Rephaite with mysterious motives. He is her master. Her trainer. Her natural enemy. But if Paige wants to regain her freedom she must allow herself to be nurtured in this prison where she is meant to die.

Milk and Honey by Rupi Kaur

I honestly have no idea what I am going to read next. I’m not really sure what I am in the mood for. I think I’ll for sure read Milk and Honey until I figure out what I want to read next. It’s a book of poems, so it’ll be a really quick read. It’ll also be different what I have been reading the last month and a half. I like reading poetry books like these. I read I Wrote This For You a few years ago and loved that and this a bit similar to that.

Here’s the Goodreads description if you’re interested: Milk and Honey is a collection of poetry and prose about survival. It is about the experience of violence, abuse, love, loss, and femininity. It is split into four chapters, and each chapter serves a different purpose, deals with a different pain, heals a different heartache. milk and honey takes readers through a journey of the most bitter moments in life and finds sweetness in them because there is sweetness everywhere if you are just willing to look.

The Bone Season by Samantha Shannon
5 out of 5 stars

“There was no normal. There never had been. “Normal” and “natural” were the biggest lies we’d ever created.”

Goodreads Description: The year is 2059. But if Paige wants to regain her freedom she must allow herself to be nurtured in this prison where she is meant to die. The Bone Season introduces a compelling heroine and also introduces an extraordinary young writer, with huge ambition and a teeming imagination. Samantha Shannon has created a bold new reality in this riveting debut.

Where has this book been all my life? Oh yeah…sitting on my bookshelf collecting dust for a year and a half. THIS. BOOK. OMG. It was everything I hoped it would be and more. I buddy read it with Maren from The Worn Bookmark. I was a little skeptical at first though, not going to lie. In the first few pages you’re given all these charts and lists and I’m like “WTF THIS IS SO MUCH TO REMEMBER“. I felt like it was going to be a struggle to try to remember all these different things and unnaturals. By the way guys, there is a glossary in the back of the book (I didn’t know until I finished reading – but I didn’t need the glossary, thankfully). So yeah…I was like “nooooo, I already don’t like you“.

I kept reading anyway and I am so glad I did, because it was amazing.  Samantha did an amazing job with making it easy to follow along and not get completely overwhelmed with all of the different unnaturals. The world was so cool and different. It was really creepy at times too, which I love. I love a good creep factor in a book. There were so many different unnaturals, but they were all really interesting. Depending on the unnatural, they all had different abilities…that’s where the charts at the beginning come in handy. Although like I said, it’s really easy to just follow along without. So many things were happening and I felt like it was really fast paced, which I love. Back to back action, especially the second half of the book. It was then that I was like “this is intense and I love every second of it and this book“.

I loved the characters, especially the Warden and Paige. The Warden is my new fictional crush, love him. AHHHHHH! Paige was a pretty tough cookie and I loved it. I will forever ship the Warden and Paige. Overall, this book was amazing. I loved everything about it. It was such a fun read and it kept me on the edge of my seat every page. I highly recommend picking it up!

“Knowledge is dangerous. Once you know something, you can’t get rid of it. You have to carry it. Always.”

I was approved for Goodbye Days on Netgalley, which I originally planned to read next, but after the end of The Bone Season I am definitely picking up The Mime Order first. I am dying to see what happens next in the series! 😀 By the way, I dreamt about the Warden last night, so this book really stuck with my after finishing it yesterday. Haha. Goodbye Days will be my next read after the Mime Order though and I am STOKED!!! I am so glad I was approved for it.

ONLY A RENEGADE WILL SURVIVE

Reckless, desperate, and distraught, Noa Sullivan leaps into a collapsing Portal in the explosive finale of Shattered Blue— the jaw-dropping, award-winning first installment in The Light Trilogy— in wild hope of rescuing her little sister Sasha. Check out my Renegade Red review down below.

Renegade Red by Lauren Bird Horowitz
5 out of 5 stars.

“The smell, the feel, intoxicated; she was drunk with pages white, thirsting for ink.”

I loved Shattered Blue so much and I was dying to see what happens next in the trilogy. Above is a closer look at the different covers that you can get Renegade Red in. As you read the book, you’ll see how all the different covers fit along with the book. Such a cool concept with the three different covers, so exciting!

One of my favorite things about Shattered Blue is that there is poetry written in the book that connects with the story as well. I was so happy to see that Renegade Red also had poetry included as well. A lot of the lines in the book even had a poetry feel to them. It all flows together nicely and it’s one of my favorite things!

“I’m a poet, Judah. Words are sacred.”

It was awesome jumping back into the Light Trilogy and getting to read more about the characters that I love, especially my fictional crush Judah! Noa was totally a “girl beast” in this book and it was awesome. She a total bad-ass and I loved it. You get to see a whole new side of Callum and Judah in this book, which I loved. In Renegade Red they are in Aurora, so it was cool getting a glimpse of Judah and Callum’s world; the fae world. Being in Aurora meant a ton of new characters! It was exciting to be introduced to new characters. Some you’ll love and some you’ll really dislike.

Noa, Judah, and Callum are on the hunt to find Noa’s sister Sasha and it gets pretty crazy throughout. Renegade Red is a lot darker (and a little creepy) than Shattered Blue was, but I loved that. It was different and cool. Renegade Red is twisted in so many ways and when you think you know what’s going on, you have no idea. I thought I had it all figured out and time after time I was shocked and surprised. I wanted to scream and I wanted to throw the book, lol. All in the best way, because it was such a good book.

Overall, Renegade Red was everything I hoped it would be and more. I loved how it all played out and I loved that it kept me on the edge of my seat every single page. Amazing. There are so many twist in this book. The ending, OMG. I am already dying for the third book. Mind-blowing! Your heart will stop and it will shatter. I am still trying to pick up the pieces.

“Love is tricky, and love is strong. Not some flower but a warrior weed, growing in any condition, through any obstacle, surviving froze tundras, pushing up through cracks in stone!”

Renegade Red will be released March 14th, so mark your calendars! If you haven’t read Shattered Blue, go pick it up now! 😀

I hope you are as excited about this release as I am!

Shattered Blue by Lauren Bird Horowitz

I talk about this series so much, because it holds a place in my heart. I love the series so much. Bird is also such a cool person and she writes amazing books (and poetry). Shattered Blue is out now and the sequel (Renegade Red) will be released March 14th. It has definitely flown under the radar and I think more people should be reading and talking about it.

I honestly have no idea who to put down for this one. I’m drawing a serious blank. I guess I’ll just go with Hermione from Harry Potter even if I REALLY DO NOT like her at all. She had a strong desire to do good with her school work and didn’t really seem to like having fun very much…..which was annoying. I swear she never let Ron and Harry have fun.

The Knife of Never Letting Go by Patrick Ness

Mayor Prentiss hands down! His character was brilliant. You wanted to hate him so badly (and at times you really did hate him), but then you also wanted to believe every single thing that came out of his mouth and trust him more than everything (and at times you really did trust him). I think he was very good at manipulating people in the book and even us readers!

The Serpent King by Jeff Zentner

This was one of my favorite books last year, so I have to include it in this list. I think everyone should read it. It was so good, but keep tissues on hand! I can’t wait to get my hands on Jeff’s new book; Goodbye Days.

This is one of my favorite book cover designs. The cover is so pretty with the yellow, the anchor, and the flowers. Under the dust jacket is even more amazing and pretty! It’s so colorful and I am obsessed with it. It was a total cover by for me, but I am really looking forward to reading it as well.

Carve the Mark by Veronica Roth
Caraval by Stephanie Gerber

Luckily, these are both out now and I own copies. I can’t wait to dive into them, because they both sound so good. I also LOVE Divergent so much, so I am stoked to see what Carve the Mark is all about.

I don’t really reread books very often, but I think I’ll go with Harry Potter for this one. The books are so fun to read and I love to watch the movies over and over again.

I bought two Renegade Red inspired jewelry pieces. I wouldn’t say that I spent too much on them though, because they were fairly reasonable pricing and the quality is amazing. It’s probably the most expensive book-related items I have bought. Above is a picture of my red tube bracelet. I haven’t received my second bracelet yet. I will say though as far as too much time goes, I think I invested way too much time into the 5th Wave series only to be completely let down with that ending….WTF?!

Book Haul|| January.

BOOKHAUL

Hey! 🙂

I hope you guys had a good first month of the new year! I got quite a lot of books this month, but VERY cheap or free! I only paid full price (well Amazon full price) for three books. I’m also including some other bookish goodies that I got this month as well aside from just books. I am doing my post a little different this month, because when I rearranged my bookshelves earlier in January I already put away all the books that I bought and I really didn’t want to get them all down to take pictures. I usually don’t put my books away until after I take my monthly haul pictures. I am using pictures that I took for my bookstagram throughout the month of January for a lot of these haul pictures. Now let’s get into my January book haul!

Amazon.

Carve the Mark by Veronica Roth
Caraval by Stephanie Garber

These beauties are finally here! I don’t plan to buy a lot of new releases this year. These are two of my most anticipated books of the year and I am stoked to read them both. Also, the book covers for both of these books are even more amazing in person. You’ll see bigger versions of these two pictures down below as well, because I need them for my bookish goodies section of the post. 😛

Pick Me Up by Adam J. Kurtz
*linked to Amazon*

I got Pick Me Up, because it reminds me of Wreck This Journal (which I love) and it’s a fun little journal time book. I figured this one will be good for this year, especially because I see a lot of stressful times ahead for me this year.

The Diabolic by S. J. Kincaid
Georgia Peaches and Other Forbidden Fruit by Robin Brown
Belle (OUAT) Funko

I was taking part in Maren’s (The Worn Bookmark) read my book challenge last year and I won her giveaway! So I bought these three things with that Amazon gift card that I won from her. Thanks again, Maren! 😀 I’ve been wanting The Diabolic since before it came out and now I finally have it. Georgia Peaches was really high on my want list and Belle is my favorite from OUAT.

Book Depository.

Slammed by Colleen Hoover
Point of Retreat by Colleen Hoover
This Girl by Colleen Hoover

This was my first time ordering from Book Depository and probably my last, because This Girl came damaged. I knew it would take a long time to get to me (which I was fine with), but when it finally got to me it was damaged and that made the wait more annoying in the end. It has a scratch right across the front cover and a tear. You can’t really see it in the picture, but in person it looks pretty bad. 😦 Anyway! I’ve read almost all of CoHo’s books, but I don’t own them all yet, so I’ve been slowly collecting them. I haven’t read This Girl yet and I love the UK covers, so I decided to order the three books in the Slammed series from BD. I really loved the first two books and I am stoked to read This Girl.

Goodwill || Other.

Twisted by Laurie Halse Anderson
Return to the Isle of the Lost by Melissa de la Cruz
The Moon and More by Sarah Dessen
A Discovery of Witches by Deborah Harkness
The Host by Stephanie Meyer
A Man Called Ove by Fedrik Backman
The Complete Short Stories of Ernest Hemingway

I went to Goodwill with my mom and my sister and I ended up finding a lot of good books! I got five books for a total of $10.50! Amazing deal and they were all hardcovers in amazing condition! All of these were $1.99 each! A Man Called Ove my mom got for me when we were out one Saturday night. I was also sent a copy of the Hemingway stories, so I could help a friend out with a project.

Other Bookish Things.

The Light trilogy (Shattered Blue) has a jewelry line that goes along with the book series. All the jewelry is amazing! Last year I got a blue talisman bracelet (read the book to find out what it’s for 😛 ) which was for Shattered Blue. Renegade Red is releasing in in March and there is now new jewelry pieces to go along with that book! I purchased one of the color tube charm bracelets, which I am obsessed with!

You can choose between four different color tubes and you can customize the charms with whatever initials that you want. I went with a red tube for my boy Judah and J+N for my ship. There is also a red talisman that I am dying to get my hands on. I plan to eventually buy one of those ones things settle down for me after the wedding. Speaking of wedding! I ended up buying another charm bracelet and customized it to wear at my wedding! It hasn’t arrived yet, but I am stoked to see it in person.

This was my last Read Happy Plan package. I decided to cancel it for a bit this year, but I will definitely be getting it later on in the year once I don’t have so many things going on that needs money! lol. February is going to be quite the expensive month for me, sigh.

Craftedvan makes and sells magnetic bookmarks on Etsy and they came up with a new subscription service called the Read Happy Plan and every month you get a set of bookmarks and an art print. For this month the color theme was blue and it was a space theme, which I love! I didn’t take a picture of the things by themselves, but here is the picture I took of it with Carve the Mark.

I also got these really cool Falling Kingdoms buttons from the publisher since I preordered Crystal Storm! 😀 Hopefully I will finally get to reading CS in February. I also got some preorder swag from preordering Caraval, which is pictured down below. Tote bag, tattoos, poster, colored pencils, and a map poster that you can color.

I did get the Nerdy Post this month as well, but I didn’t take any pictures of it because I actually got it for the fiance. It was Star Wars themed and I don’t really like Star Wars. I seen one movie (a newer one last year), but never seen the others. He loves Star Wars though, so I got it for him. It had a lot of neat things though.

That’s all for my book haul! No more book buying for me for the next few months. I have lots to do for my wedding and save a little money for the honeymoon! What new books did you get this month? Have you read any of the books that I got? Feel free to link me to your book haul posts if you have one!
