I can’t believe how fast October and Halloween flew by, but I am excited for Thanksgiving next! FOOOOD! 😛 I made this awesome Halloween TBR at the beginning of the month, but I only read three books that were on the list and a little bit of another. It was almost a complete fail, sadly! I was in a reading slump throughout the month of October, so I didn’t read as much as I was hoping. I was even slacking on the audiobooks as well! I’ve noticed that at the end of the year I always tend to read less. I think that maybe that has to do with reading so much throughout the year that I just get burned out and everything just starts sounding the same and losing my interest quick.
Let’s get into the recap! You can find a full list of these books and the other books I read this year over here. All will be linked to Goodreads below and I will also link to individual blog posts for them if I did a review.
DNF (did not finish) Books:
These are the books I started, but did not end up finishing throughout the month of October.
I didn’t get the chance to finish this book in October, but I do plan to eventually finish the book. I have read a few of the stories in the book so far and I have really enjoyed them all. It’s only a DNF, because I haven’t finished it in October and I might not finish it this year. There are a lot of books that I really want to read still this year, so I may put this to the side for a little while and focus on those others. I do want to finish it though, so it’s not at all because I don’t like it.
Physically Read Books:
These are the books that I read by myself (aka not audio) throughout the month of October.
siege and storm by leigh bardugo – 3.5 OUT OF 5 STARS.
I liked Siege and Storm and I am definitely a Leigh Bardugo fan. I did like Shadow and Bone a lot more than this one though. Sturmhond definitely made this book really good. I think it wouldn’t have been as good without him. I am really excited to finish the series and move on to Six of Crows!
the dead house by dawn kurtagich – REVIEW. – 2.5-3 OUT OF 5 STARS.
I had a hard time figuring out a rating for this book and honestly, I really didn’t like it that much. It actually put me into quite the reading slump in October, which sucked because I had so many books I wanted to read this month. It was interesting at times, but most of the time I was just soooo bored. It wasn’t as creepy as everyone said it was (in my opinion of course).
the hallowed ones by laura bickle – REVIEW. – 4.5 OUT OF 5 STARS.
The Hallowed Ones was such a great book, OMG! I had no idea what to expect, to be honest. It was a little bit of a slow start, but everything happening in the book definitely made up for that. It was SO good and I can’t wait to read the second book.
asylum by madeleine roux – REVIEW. – 4 OUT OF 5 STARS.
I enjoyed this book SO much! It was definitely creepy and had me creeped out and staying up late not being able to sleep! I loved the way that it was written and that there were pictures included. It’s always nice to have a visual to make things creepier.
cinder by marissa myer – REVIEW. – 4 OUT OF 5 STARS.
I finally got around to reading Cinder after two years of wanting to read it. I loved the book, but I figured Cinder out pretty quickly and that was a bit of a disappointment. I wanted to be surprised and shocked, but I wasn’t. I still really enjoyed the book and can’t wait to binge read the series in November!
Audiobooks:
These are the books that I listened to the audio versions of throughout the month of October.
harry potter and the deathly hallows by j.k. rowling – 4 OUT OF 5 STARS.
So sad to be finished with the Harry Potter series. 😦 I really enjoyed Deathly Hallows so much and it was pretty sad as well. I was definitely crying like a baby, haha. Prisoner of Azkaban will always be my favorite though and I couldn’t give this a five out of five stars, because I didn’t love it more than that one. I still have the movies to watch though and hopefully will have them all watched before this year ends; well before November ends.
don’t stay up late by r.l. stine – MINI REVIEW. – 3 OUT OF 5 STARS.
doll bones by holly black – MINI REVIEW. – 3 OUT OF 5 STARS.
stolen children by peg kehret – MINI REVIEW. – 4 OUT OF 5 STARS.
party games by r.l. stine – 3 OUT OF 5 STARS.
I really enjoyed all four of these books. I wanted to try to fit in some “Halloweenish” type audiobooks into the month of October, so these were my choices. They were all really good and I am glad I was able to listen to them. I love that R.L. Stine relaunched the Fear Street series and with new books! Both the books above from him are the first and second books in the Fear Street relaunch. All of these are good books and super short!
For the month of November I don’t really have a big TBR planned this time. I plan to binge read the Lunar Chronicles series after I finish Fablehaven. I still need to get my hands in Fairest and of course Winter when it’s released. I also might try to squeeze in Carry On by Rainbow Rowell if I can. Other than that, I really have no idea what else I will read yet. I think I want to get back to using my TBR jar like I mentioned before. I’ve had books sitting on my bookshelves and Kindle for such a long time and I want to get to reading those and my TBR jar will help with that.
How was your reading month for October? Have you read any of these books? Let me know in the comments and link me to your recap/wrap up posts!
I actually failed with my Halloween movie list that I watch every October too, sigh. I plan to watch Hocus Pocus and Halloweentown today though, because I can’t just NOT watch them. A day late, oh well! I planned to watch them on Halloween, but ID Discovery took over my day and then Halloween things with the niece and nephew. OOPS! Here are my niece and nephew in their scary Halloween costumes this year.
Nephew in white and Niece in black.
He’s a bloody skeleton and she’s a zombie.
I hope you guys have an amazing day!
Great wrap up post, I really enjoyed reading it.
Here’s my October wrap-up post:

Thank you! 🙂
Yay for Siege And Storm, Asylum and Cinder! 😀 i hope you are able to get over your reading slump soon… And your niece and nephew look very scary indeed!
I hope November I do not have this crazy reading slump, because I want to catch up with all the Lunar Chronicles books! 😀
The fact that you’re reading the Lunar Chronicles series makes me wanna cry because I’ve literally been wanting to read that series all year! I hope you’ll enjoy it all! 😄
And congratulations on your reading! I don’t think this is a fail in the slightest! At least, not compared to my own progress in terms of reading on October 😭
I’ve been wanting to read it forever now too! So glad I am finally going to read the series! 🙂 Hopefully you get around to starting the Lunar Chronicles soon!
I guess it’s a fail because I only read 3 out of my big list of Halloween books for my TBR, lol. At least I did get some good books read though! 😀
It’s so interesting that you enjoyed Shadow and Bone more than Siege and Storm. I had the opposite reaction. I do agree that Sturmhond was carrying the book though. I hope you enjoy Ruin and Rising! It was my favourite of the trilogy.
Prisoner of Azkaban is my favourite of the HP series too! It’s my favourite movie and book. ❤
I tend to like second books in series a lot better than the first books, but not this time. I felt a little bored with it at times. Also, I loved Mal so much in the first book and he started to annoying me in the second, haha. I still need to read Ruin and Rising! I am hoping that is even better! I think it would have been an even bigger bore had Sturmhond not be in the book, to be honest. He did carry it through most of the time for me.
I really enjoyed the Prisoner of Azkaban movie as well! I am just now watching the movies for the first time too. Hopefully will finish both Deathly Hallows movies this week.
🙂 ❤
Yeah I totally agree with you about Mal. I really liked him in Book 1 but he was a bit needy and whiny in Book 2. I ended up really loving him in Ruin and Rising though! Hope you have the same experience! I won’t comment on Sturmhond’s role in Book 3…
You are going to make me abandon my Lunar Chronicles binge reading and read Ruin and Rising 😛
I love both so no complaints here 😀
Holy cow you’ve been busy! I wish I could find the time to actually listen to audio books. My work doesn’t allow them and I listen to podcasts on the way to and from work. Maybe I will start working out and using that as an excuse. Haha! I really want to read Cinder too but I’m sad it was so predictable. I just started Shadow and Bone and I’m loving the series! I might have to hit you up for some fangirling. (Is it sad that I want her to get with the Darkling????)
It’s nice being in an office job and not having to talk to customers or anything. I am able to just listen to audibooks all day. I wish I knew to do this years ago, haha. I only just started this year listening to audiobooks at work and I’ve had an office job for over 5 years, lol!
Hopefully the other books in the Lunar Chronicles won’t be as predictable. I’m glad you’re loving Shadow and Bone! I think everyone wants her to get with the Darkling at some point. Haha. I have a love/hate for the Darkling. I am a Mal fan though.
Oh yea I’m feeling like I will like Mal more as the series goes on but at this point in the book he’s just being a huge jerk and I want to push him off a cliff. Haha
There was one point in the book that I just fell in love with him, haha. I’m sure you’ll see when.
This is super cute! I love all the Halloweenie stufffff! 🙂
You read so much! I need to do a reread of Harry Potter. I got the new illustrated version so I am tempted to crack that open and start reading it. But I think I am holding out for Winter to arrive on my doorstep, hehehehe
Thanks! 😀
This was my first time reading HP. Well listening, but the audiobooks were awesome. Perfect narrator for all the books. I was pretty much in love with his voice, haha. I wanted to get the new illustrated version of HP, but I didn’t love the series enough to justify spending $32 on it; that’s what Target wanted for it. I mean I did love it, but not completely obsessed and in love like a lot of other HP fans and I’m sure that has everything to do with the fact that I never read the books as a kid where I think I would have enjoyed it 100 times more if I did.
Amazon has is for 22! I got 2 for the price of 1
I actually enjoyed Siege and Storm more then Shadow and Bone. I still haven’t read the third one yet, so if you LOVE it let me know and I may be inspired to finally pick it up! I still have to read Fairest before Winter as well, but I’m not entirely sure if I can be bothered, do you reckon it’ll be really important to the story?
Your niece and nephew honestly look scary, I don’t think I would be chill walking down the street and tiny monsters were just strolling along with me.
I always love your rap up posts, everything looks so neat and pretty!
Siege and Storm was a little boring for me and Mal was starting to annoy me after I loved him so much in Shadow and Bone, lol. Hopefully Ruin and Rising is better! I think I’ll probably read it in December. I don’t know if Fairest is really that important, but I still want to check it out. I don’t know if I will read it before or after Winter. I do know that I want to at least read it though.
Haha, there weren’t too many kids running around with super scary costumes that I seen this year. This year was the first time I went out trick or treating with them since they were both a lot younger.
Thank you! 🙂 I like the new layout I have been using for my wrap up posts over the last few months. I know in the beginning of the year it wasn’t as neat. I think as the months go on and the more I blog, I am always fixing things up and making it better. 😀 and that’s always fun to change things up.
I can’t remember his name properly, but he’s the ship captain in Siege and Storm (Nicoli or somethings think). He like MADE that book for me! Yeah I want to at least check out fairest as well.
I read “food” somewhere in the early goings of the post and am reminded of your leftover pumpkin; to which I skipped reading the rest of this post temporarily to say that you should make pie or something with it idk LOL.
Since Nikolai basically made a lot of what was good in S&S, you’ll surely like his involvement in R&R.
I have a huge pumpkin and nothing to do with it, lol. I’ve never made pumpkin pie from scratch before, but maybe this could be a good experiment! lol. Plus, I love pumpkin pie more than a lot of things in life…so that’s always a plus. Unless it turns out completely horrible and I end up hating pumpkin pie forever. sigh.
